PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Lead the accounting close and financial reporting consistent with business unit’s accounting practices and generally accepted accounting principles.  Performs a full spectrum of complex accounting, regulatory, reporting and financial projects and assignments and responds to inquiries of senior management, business units and external agencies. Works with internal and external customers to identify their needs and provides guidance and expertise.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

  • Lead and assist staff with monthly tasks, review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Ensure that all financial transactions are recorded accurately and timely as well as analyzing financial statements and variances.
  • Assist in the preparation the monthly reporting packages, including analysis of current actual results to budgeted results and to prior period actual results for use in internal and external reporting.
  • Work directly with manager/supervisor to ensure we are meeting project milestones as well as company and business unit deadlines.
  • Coordinate the internal and external financial reporting to the parent company and external stakeholders.  Financial reporting shall consist of the Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Cash Flow and related disclosure items.
  • Preparation and analysis of complex accounting transactions including derivatives, cash flow hedge accounting and associated disclosures.
  • Ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley control requirements.
  • Act in a lead professional capacity possessing a high level of specialized knowledge and recognized as an expert/authority in their area.
  • Apply expertise to address and evaluate significant business needs/problems and complex issues to ultimately provide recommended solutions.
  • Preparation and manipulation of complex financial and accounting models and ability to extract and data mine from and between several different applications.
  • Research and document technical accounting issues in accordance with US GAAP related to BU transactions.
  • Assist in the preparation of audited stand-alone financial statements for multiple entities and in consolidation including footnote disclosures and supporting work papers.
  • Prepare, review and analyze account reconciliations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education - Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business administration or equivalent experience. CPA, CMA, MBA and/or other professional certificates / advanced degrees are preferred.

Experience –8 years accounting and industry experience with knowledge of advanced accounting and financial theory.  Big Four accounting experience preferred.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities –

  • Must have skills in leadership and teambuilding, organizing, coordinating, and delegating to effectively lead staff.
  • Experience with accounting for commodity trading and/or energy derivatives highly desirable.
  • Experience with multi-company consolidations and prior SEC reporting experience preferred.
  • Must have the ability to work in a large, complex organization and to build both internal and external relationships to achieve desired objectives.
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of 'generally accepted accounting principles' and a thorough knowledge of accounting methods and techniques with the ability to apply both in problem solving.
  • Must be able to convey in verbal and original written correspondence and reports, complex technical matter in a clear and concise manner for a broad audience, from executive management to those with little industry knowledge.
  • Experience in the electric and/or gas utility industry highly desirable.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics GP and Hyperion is also desirable.
